We take note when designers leap out of their own; so, when Damien Ravn, the first Norwegian graduate from Antwerp Royal Academy, currently teaching BA and MA Fashion at the Warsaw Fine Arts Academy got in contact with us, we didn’t linger to ask for an interview.
As it turns out, Ravn was always highly interested in fashion, but only gave it a serious attempt after he started studying at the Scandinavian Design College in Denmark. Currently running his own label in Antwerp, Damien Ravn has more than just designing clothes on his future agenda.
'I think any inspiration that is instantly visible is not good.'
From the polar circle in Norway to the Royal Academy Of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Damien Ravn enchanted us with his personal story. A family of fishermen, tailors and teachers marked the language of this young boy who grew up between wild woods and the North Sea. He inherited his compulsive obsession with millimeters and his attention for detail from his parents, knowing he would become a designer. Only five years after his degree, he is already a teacher, an art director and the designer of his own label. He knows perfectly the value of time and he stands for the concept of slow fashion which is the base of quality craftsmanship. He’s collecting prizes and mentions all over the world from the Flanders Fashion Institute on 2010 to de Festival d’Hyères on 2013. Last year he also won the competition to design the outfits for Biennale Interieur, one of the most prestigious design biennales in the world.
in addition to the designer focus editorial, damien ravn is teaming up with long time collaborator underground shoes for the NJAL competition and will be giving away a black damien ravn 3D spacer dress and a pair of double platform penny loafers to one lucky winner!
